Painting exhibition by Mr. Dang, Vietnamese, in Wako city

Vietnamese physicist Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dang (43), who is currently working at the
RIKEN Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, opened a solo exhibition of
his paintings on October 5, 2001 with the theme on "World Peace"
at the Sun Azalea exhibition hall of Wako city (suburb of Tokyo).
Mr. Dang was born in Hanoi (Vietnam) and holds two doctor degrees
- a Ph.D. in nuclear physics and a doctor of physics and mathematics sciences -
both from the Moscow State University.
He came to Japan in 1994 to work at the Institute for Nuclear Study of
the University of Tokyo. Since 1995 he has been working at RIKEN.

Mr. Dang started to draw at around five years old,
and managed to combine his study and scientific research with his art.
His works were shown in Hanoi and Moscow, but this is the
first time that he holds a solo show of his pantings in Japan.
Among 28 paintings at the exhibition, some such as "The Dream of Artist",
"The Legend of Pearl", "The End of the North Gate"
have the inspiration from the 4,000 year history of Vietnam.
His wife, Thuy Mai (41), was the model in his painting
"The end of the North Gate".

Mr. Vu Dzung - ambassador of Vietnam in Japan - gave a greeting speech,
and Mr. Akito Arima - member of the House of Councillors of Japan,
former minister of education, science and technology - gave a speech entitled
"Can a physicist be an artist?" at the opening ceremony
of the painting exhibition by Mr. Dang.

The exhibition is open until October 11, 2001.
